Not to keep harping on Gwen Stefani, but
Oh, and don’t be too surprised if they deny the move initially either.
Because this ^^ article is from the end of April, and guess what happened at the beginning of June.
Aside from the fact that the band is not breaking up any time in the immediate future (they’re still contracted with Sony for three more albums as a group, according to all reports), it’s very much within the realm of possibility that Harry’s been courting Azoff for a group deal. He’s a friend of the family at this point, yes, but you don’t know how well the others may know them professionally. It’s just not been made public.
And, yes, you’re right. They probably won’t be given immediate, complete freedom. I’ve acknowledged that. I think they’ll likely stay formally closeted for a while yet, as I said, for business and financial reasons. But, that said, Azoff is known for thinking outside the box on things. He’s known for turning age old industry standards inside out. He may be the right man for the job when it comes to seeing the potential in being the first prominent band in history with an out same sex couple in the lineup.
At the very least, I think he would see the potential in selling them to an older market, which will mean, by the very nature of the older consumer, the opportunity to have less restrictions on how they express themselves and live their private and public lives. That may not mean an immediate coming out, but it could easily mean more small freedoms. Acknowledging that they live together, for example, but not confirming what that means to their relationship. Allowed to be seen together in public. Freedom to interact onstage and in interviews.
"Freedom" is a very loaded word, and it’s not always all or nothing.
When Harry said, “I’m 100% in this band.” when asked about going solo it was….
B: 1000%, by far the most convincing lie that I have ever seen him tell.
